Ch 4. Social Media – MSi9W

I thought the last chapter in Music Success in Nine Weeks was tough:  it gave me WALAD (web associated lower arm distress), but this chapter really tested my tendons.  Ariel Hyatt’s book  is the trusty 9-iron in the masochistic self-learners bag.

After rolling out pitches, filling websites with juicy content, launching a YouTube channel, and reaching out on Facebook and Twitter, my wrists took the carpal tunnel to Como and bathed in the soft Italian light for a week, rising only to dip bread in balsamic and olive oil.

Yet, this was the easiest video shoot of them all.  I walked to the end of the pier in Sidney, BC.  One lone seagull was there.  It stayed while I filmed for a few minutes, then left to find a more forthcoming feeder.  Bada bing, bada boom. After all the hours behind the screen, the real world seemed so simple… a sign perhaps?

The soundtrack is our song  Would You Mind : the first cut on our record SET.  It explores the fascination we have for building complex systems, monetizing things of little lasting value, and leaving the core of humanity well hidden until all is stripped away.  Hmm, maybe two weeks in Como.

Thanks to the Songwriters Association of Canada, and Lily Cheng in particular for enabling this excursion. And of course to Ariel Hyatt for writing the book.
